Do you really want to get to know me? OK, here goes.

I’ve spent most of my life sketching highly autobiographical fiction in my head, feeling that my own story is too mundane to present without some made-up flourishes. I may pull one or more of these novel ideas together someday, but in the meantime, here’s what I’m willing and/or eager to share about my own actual life.

I was born in 1973 in Baptist Hospital in Nashville. Being two months premature, I was quickly rushed to the more advanced neonatal unit of Vanderbilt Hospital, where I stayed for several weeks. My parents took me home to their residence in the Bordeaux neighborhood in Nashville. Then they got the hell out, or got me out of the hell, as the case may be. They were poster children for white flight (if I may editorialize) and didn’t want their child exposed to the evils of the inner city. They moved me to North Springs in Jackson County, only a couple of miles from where my father grew up and down the road from where my mother grew up. My father was a Church of Christ minister, which took us from North Springs to Gamaliel, Kentucky. He also held a full time factory job in Lafayette. My mother stayed at home with me.

After fifth grade, close to my 11th birthday, we moved to Lafayette, and my father started preaching at Union Hill Church of Christ. This was a tenuous engagement since we didn’t live near the church.

In the middle of seventh grade, in January 1986, we moved to Madison, Tennessee, which is part of Nashville, and I finally became the city boy I always knew I was. My father went back to preaching at North Springs for a while, commuting all the way from Madison, but finally it became too difficult to manage. The relocation to the Nashville area happened due to my father’s change of employment.

In 1987 I started my freshman year at Hume-Fogg Academic High School. In 1991 I started my freshman year at Emory University. Those eight years of schooling, socializing, and self-discovery were pivotal and deeply enjoyable.

After graduating college, I stayed in Atlanta, and have continued to live in the area my entire adult life. My mother passed in 1995, a few months after my graduation. I worked at a series of Haagen-Dazs ice cream shops from 1994 to 2001, dabbled in freelance writing for some local gay publications, and worked at the Equifax mailroom from 1998 to 2000. In 2002 I began working as an office manager at Houlihan’s at the Atlanta airport. While there, I went back to school and earned a business/accounting degree. In 2006, I landed my first “professional” job with Cumulus Media, and as of this writing, I am still employed there (20 years to date). My father passed in 2011.

As for my personal life, I have had four close friends for most of my adult life, who I will not place on blast by identifying in this forum. I had my first serious romantic relationship from 1994 to 1997, then a series of relatively brief relationships over the next decade or so. Finally, I met Hasahn, my current partner, in 2010, and we’ve shared a home in the Washington Park neighborhood since 2013. Prior to that I lived in the Toco Hills area of Atlanta (1994-1998), the Kensington/Decatur area (1998-2001), and Riverdale (2001-2012), where I bought my first home.

My intent is to build out this section as I have the time and the inclination to reveal more details about myself.
